Thanks to Joe Bongiorno, who first dragged me kicking and screaming into the mucky mythos of Swamp Thing, and to Paul Giachetti, who created the amazing header banner.

Thanks also to reader 'Alec Holland,' whose support has been invaluable; Mike Sterling, for promoting Swamp Thing and this site; and Kevin Church, for his excellent optimization advice.

And thanks to Len Wein, Bernie Wrightson, Alan Moore, John Totelben, Stephen Bissette, Jamie Delano, Garth Ennis and all the other creators whose work inspired this site.

Swamp Thing Film Dead in the Water, and Other Recent News
by Rich Handley
June 2, 2010

Swamp Thing has been making a lot of headlines lately. In addition to the just-revealed fifth comic-book series (see yesterday's story, below), he's reared his mossy head in other news as well:
  • Yesterday, Shannon Hood at The Flick Cast interviewed director Vincenzo Natali regarding rumors of his helming a new 3-D Swamp Thing film. "It’d be a dream come true, but there is another monster out there, and it is called the Internet, and that rumor really started because someone at a comic book convention asked me if there was any comic book character I would like to turn into a movie, and I said Swamp Thing, but I didn’t have the rights to Swamp Thing. There was some basis to it because Joel Silver who is a producer on Splice, had been working on a Swamp Thing movie, but what I have since discovered, because I talked to Joel about it, is that the rights are very complicated. It might happen, but it isn’t going to happen anytime soon, is what I am being told."

  • Natali was also quoted in an interview with MTV as saying that Alan Moore represents another stumbling block to a new film: ""Unfortunately, there is no Swamp Thing movie in the works right now because of all the legal entanglements involved with that particular property. I'm told it won't happen any time soon.... Everyone wants the Alan Moore version, I think. But, as I said, it's tricky because Alan Moore has very negative feelings toward the film industry... he's not shy about it. I honestly don't even know all of the complexities of the legal issues surrounding it, but I know they are complex."

  • Joel Silver himself also weighed in on the rumored film, during a press jaunt for upcoming film Splice. As reported by Collider.com, Silver had grim news regarding Swampy's theatrical return: "We actually developed a couple of drafts and were close, but then, all of a sudden, it became evident that the motion picture rights were not held by Warner Bros. Even though DC owned the underlying material, the movie that was made by Embassy with Adrienne Barbeau was owned by another company." I'm beginning to think Anton Arcane is running Hollywood.

  • The Sci-Fi Block's Robert Ring weighed in on DC's decision to put Swamp Thing back in DC mainstream continuity. His outlook on the subject pretty much matches mine. Check it out.

  • In this week's featured story in PopMatter's Iconographies column, Dean Blumberg took a look back at Alan Moore's and Stephen Bissette's revival of Swamp Thing waaaaaay back when, in an article entitled "It’s Not Easy Being Green: Swamp Thing, Ecology and the (Sometimes Slimy) Nature of Being." Great stuff!

  • And Shout! Factory is finally getting around to releasing the third and final volume of the Swamp Thing television series. As reported by TVShowsonDVD.com here and here, the DVD will be released on June 22, available online only via the Shout! Select program at the studio's online store. The title is now up for pre-order, and will cost $34.99, plus shipping and handling. Shout! is offering all three season sets separately for $91.96 total, as well as in a Complete Series "bundle" (sans special packaging) for $79.99 plus shipping and handling.
