Thanks to Joe Bongiorno, who first dragged me kicking and screaming into the mucky mythos of Swamp Thing, and to Paul Giachetti, who created the amazing header banner.

Thanks also to reader 'Alec Holland,' whose support has been invaluable; Mike Sterling, for promoting Swamp Thing and this site; and Kevin Church, for his excellent optimization advice.

And thanks to Len Wein, Bernie Wrightson, Alan Moore, John Totelben, Stephen Bissette, Jamie Delano, Garth Ennis and all the other creators whose work inspired this site.

Swamp Rap
by Rich Handley
Oct. 25, 2010

I get a kick out of unexpected twists on the Swamp Thing motif, and this one was definitely unexpected! Rap musician and Swamp Thing fan Anthony Brown sent me the following e-mail a couple of weeks ago, but I've been slammed with work and forgot to post it until today. Take it away, Anthony:

Tha Mutation--Swamp Thing Goes Rap "First off, I just wanna say how awesome I think you are for continuing to run an official site for Swamp Thing. Be it that I am a huge fan of Swamp Thing, but I haven't followed the comics as much as I would like to, guess I consider myself old school. I love the feature films, the series, and the animated short lived show that came from it, which leads me to why I'm here. I'm actually an up-and-coming rapper from West Tennessee, and I've just finished my newest mixtape, Tha Mutation, which is a mixtape at the core but it's surrounded by the storyline to The Return Of Swamp Thing. It's kind of my way of paying tribute to my favorite superhero, I also have a classic comic book-esque cover for it that I have photoshopped. I just would like to present these things to you in hopes that you would post them on your site so true Swamp Thing fans can see how I'm trying to bring attention to him in a whole different light! I've attached the cover to this email, and you can check out a promo vid for Tha Mutation at www.youtube.com/itsyaboih2. Everything I'm doing is completely non-profit, just so ya know. I'm not trying to make money off of other people's trademarks, I've just always wanted to do something like this and now I finally have. Thank you for your time and attention; have a great day!"

That's a pretty damn cool cover (click on the image to view a larger version). I never thought I'd see the day when the worlds of Swamp Thing and rap music would collide. I'd pay good money to see Swamp Thing break-dancing. Wouldn't you?

I have to rib Anthony a bit, though. The Return of Swamp Thing? Wow! That's like doing a Star Trek homage and choosing "Spock's Brain," "Code of Honor," "Move Along Home," Star Trek V: The Final Frontier or pretty much any episode of Voyager as your inspiration. (I've just outed myself as a Trek fan. Now people will see me as a dork... well, the four or five people who didn't already think that, knowing that I maintain a Web site about Swamp Thing and write books about Planet of the Apes.)

But all teasing aside ('cause I mean NO disrespect whatsoever—I'm always impressed when people have the courage to share their creative endeavors), Anthony's album cover brought a smile to my face, and so I thought I'd share it with you folks as well. Enjoy the music video, peeps. And thanks for sharing, Anthony. Much success with your music career!

[Incidentally, although I definitely appreciate Anthony's comments, I should point out, for the sake of any lawyers reading this, that Roots of the Swamp Thing makes no claims of officiality.]
