Thanks to Joe Bongiorno, who first dragged me kicking and screaming into the mucky mythos of Swamp Thing, and to Paul Giachetti, who created the amazing header banner.

Thanks also to reader 'Alec Holland,' whose support has been invaluable; Mike Sterling, for promoting Swamp Thing and this site; and Kevin Church, for his excellent optimization advice.

And thanks to Len Wein, Bernie Wrightson, Alan Moore, John Totelben, Stephen Bissette, Jamie Delano, Garth Ennis and all the other creators whose work inspired this site.

Chronological Breakdown
• Between 200,000,000 and 65,000,000 B.C.: Sent back in time by a Hell-Jewel, Swamp Thing barely survives a Tyrannosaurus Rex attack. Time-traveler Milo Mobius, cursed with immortality, kills the dinosaur but is impaled when it falls on him in its death throes. As Swamp Thing is swept forward in time, Milo rises unscathed and continues on his own journey.

• 100 A.D.: Swamp Thing briefly arrives in ancient Rome, a prisoner in Caesar's arena. Among the gladiators is time-traveler Milo Mobius, who is distracted by Swamp Thing's arrival and cut down in battle. As Swamp Thing is swept forward in time, Milo rises unscathed and continues on his journey.

• Mid-1300s: Swamp Thing finds himself in Europe at the time of the Black Death. Evading a mob that has mistaken him for a plague victim, he comes upon a villa where he learns how his connection to time-traveler Milo Mobius began. Milo, having stolen the jewel from his lover Gretel to secure immortality in this time of death, is cursed to live an eternity alone, forever dying and being drawn back to the dawn of time until a friend ends his curse by killing him. The mob soon spots Swamp Thing and accidentally torches Milo's home. Milo dies in flame, but as Swamp Thing is swept forward in time, Milo rises unscathed and continues on his journey.

• 1861: Swamp Thing finds himself in the middle of the U.S. Civil War. Nearby is Milo Mobius, who is shot down by Rebel raiders trying to steal his Hell-Jewel. As Swamp Thing is swept forward in time, Milo rises unscathed and continues on his journey.

• June 1974: Due to his contact with a Hell-Jewel [in Swamp Thing issue #11, Swamp Thing is swept through time, again and again meeting cursed time traveler Milo Mobius. Milo begs Swamp Thing to kill him and put an end to his eternal cycle, but Swamp Thing is unable to do what he asks so Milo keeps leaping back to the beginning of time, re-starting the cycle once more. This time, he leaves the Hell-Jewel behind when he leaps, so Swamp Thing hides it for safe-keeping. Meanwhile, Matt Cable, Abby Arcane and Jefferson Bolt bury Bolt's girlfriend Ruth. Bolt is aching with grief and in need of a distraction, so Matt asks him to join their hunt for the Swamp Thing. Bolt initially blames Swamp Thing for Ruth's death, but Matt forces him to face his bigotry and Bolt reluctantly agrees to give Swamp Thing a chance.

Trivia
• Nestor Redondo steps in, as of this issue, to become Swamp Thing's second ongoing artist. This issue also welcomes a new recurring character to the fold: Jefferson Bolt.

• Given the date of 100 A.D., the "Caesar" in question would appear to be Trajan Caesar.

• Although it's not specifically stated in the issue, the man who slays Mobius in 1861 resembles DC's Jonah Hex prior to his disfigurement.

• During Rick Veitch's tenure as writer of the second series, Swamp Thing will again travel throughout time against his will as a result of contact with a mysterious gem.
