Although that goal did not ultimately pan out, Crosier has graciously agreed to discuss the proposal with Roots of the Swamp Thing.
China Mieville Offers Hints of His Shelved Swamp Thing Plans

As reported yesterday, British science fiction novelist China Mieville had been hired to write a new Swamp Thing comic series, only to have the axe fall once work was already underway, so that DC Comics could instead return the Bog God to mainstream DC continuity. I chatted with Mr. Mieville about his canceled Swamp Thing run, and though understandably reticent to discuss what would have been so soon after learning of DC's decision, he did offer several juicy tidbits.
Roots of the Swamp Thing Is Back in Business

For the past two years, I've been working on finishing up two Planet of the Apes reference books. It was grueling work, but rewarding—and I'm almost done with the second one. As such, I figured it was time to dust off the ol' Swamp Thing site, and to this time try to remain active with it. For now, I'll just be posting news updates, but in the next few months, once I've gotten the second book off to the printer, I plan to jump back into this site wholeheartedly, and get back to chronicling Hellblazer on the timeline, adding new entries to In the Swamplight, updating the calendar and so forth.

God, I've missed this mucky place. (Click the title of this story for more information.)

John Whalen Is the Very Opposite of an Un-Man

I want to offer a public thank-you to The Un-Men's John Whalen, who proved this week that he's a great guy in addition to being a great writer. A few weeks ago, I experienced what can only be described as the scariest night of my life--witnessing my six-year-old son, Joshua, having an epileptic seizure. Upon finding out, John went above and beyond the call of duty to help cheer him up. (Click the title of this story to find out what he did.)

New Section: In the Swamplight

Ever since creating this site a few years ago, I've intended to spotlight individual issues, but time has always been the enemy. Well, I've finally found the time to create such a page, and what better place to start than at the beginning? Thus, for the first entry in my new "In the Swamplight" section, I've chosen The House of Secrets #92, featuring the first appearance of the Swamp Thing. "In the Swamplight" will take a closer look at individual issues, including story breakdowns, issue credits, select trivia, cover images and more.
World's Finest Swamp Thing?

Thanks to a heads-up from reader 'Alec Holland,' I've discovered a two-part Swamp Thing-esque tale from 1973, which appeared in issues #219-220 of World's Finest, DC's popuplar Superman/Batman team-up book. Back then, half the DC universe seemed to be doing some sort of swamp-creature story, and apparently, World's Finest was along for the ride on that particular bandwagon, with a tale by Bob Haney, in which Superman and Batman met up with the creature known as El Monstro. The review is not a positive one, though that isn't my issue with it--everyone has a right to their opinion, of course.
A Brief Glimpse Into Josh Dysart's Swamp Thing Plans

When Joshua Dysart took over the writing chores on the fourth incarnation of Swamp Thing (as of issue #9), he had several long-term plans in mind. Unfortunately, those plans were cut short when the series was prematurely canceled, only 21 issues into his run, at issue #29. But there was still more story to tell, and only Dysart knows what would have happened next. Although he prefers to keep most details secret for now (in case a future opportunity to revisit those concepts should ever crop up), he was kind enough to provide some hints for readers of this site.
Introducing Alex Olsen's Predecessor...Sort Of

When Josh Dysart outlined some of his unrealized plans for the fourth Swamp Thing series, he revealed an interesting fact: namely, that yet another earth elemental was known as Swamp Thing before Alec Holland. This one lived in turn-of-the-20th-century Louisiana and knew the incestual couple known as the Fated Cajun Lovers of 1900. (Click the title of this story for more information.)

Forgotten Lore: The Swamp Thing and Hellblazer Tales That Almost Were

Over the years, several Swamp Thing- and Hellblazer-related tales have been conceived or announced that never saw publication, canceled for a variety of reasons--sometimes as per the writer's choice, other times on the editorial side of the desk. Check out summaries of a number of stories that never made it to a store near you. Covers, when available, are included as well. (Click the title of this story for more information.)

Rejected Swamp Thing Pitch from Darko Macan

Back when Brian Vaughan was pitching the concept that eventually became Swamp Thing series 3, noted Croatian writer Darko Macan put his hand in the game as well. Darko's proposal was ultimately rejected because Vertigo preferred to go in a (excuse the pun) darker direction, a la Vaughan's storyline. Now, he's graciously made this unpublished proposal available to fans, here at Roots of the Swamp Thing. (Click the title of this story for more information.)
